Philip's Atlas of the World

The reference maps, which form the main body of this atlas, have been prepared in accordance with the highest standards of international cartography to provide an accurate and detailed representation of the Earth. A hallmark of Philip's mapping is the use of hill shading and relief coloring to create a graphic impression of landforms: this makes the maps exceptionally easy to read.

The atlas consists of the following features:

Scale Bar - allows you to measure distances accurately in both miles and kilometers, and gives the scale of each map.

Locator Map - shows the exact coverage of each page and indicates the page numbers for maps of neighbouring regions.

Layer-Colouring - altitude is shown by contour colour-banding and hill-shading to give a stunning visual impression of the Earth's surface.

Letter-Figure Grid - complements latitude and longitude, and makes name-finding via the index as simple as with a road atlas.

Political Maps - for each continent show national boundaries, highlight the size of each country in relation to its neighbors, and mark capital cities as well as major provincial centers.

World City Maps - mark tourist sites for 67 of the world's most important cities, accompanied by satellite images for nine of the cities showing their locations from space.

Thematic Maps - diagrams, charts, graphs and tables explain the fundamentals of human geography and compare nation on key themes such as population, language, religion, politics and the environment.

Index - uses local spellings, and includes geographical features such as mountains, lakes and deserts, as well as towns, cities, provinces and countries.
