Tiruchirapalli or Trichy, a city in Tamil Nadu has been named after a Jain monk called Chira. Literally translated the city means “the town of respected Chira”. The city is also the administrative headquarters of Tiruchirappalli District.
The city is dotted with several attractions for the discerning visitor. One of the most astounding places of interest of the city is Rock Fort. It is a 183-meter high rock that houses a Ganesha temple on top of it. Therefore, the city is also called as the Rock City.
The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, located 6 km north of the city is the largest temple complex in the world. This magnificent temple is built on an island in the middle of the Kaveri River and enclosed by seven rectangular walled courtyards.
The Jambukeshwara Temple dedicated to Shiva is thronged by tourists from all parts of the world. It is said that once an elephant worshipped Shiva under the holy Jambu tree that lent the name to this temple.
